Here's one of our plows working westbound (look closely and you can see the little green laser light it uses to help guide its way). Traction tires are currently advised. It was a busy morning for our crews on US 97 Blewett Pass, which closed for about four hours due to heavy snow, multiple spin outs and poor visibility. Once the disabled vehicles were cleared, our crews were able to get the highway plowed and back open. It will continue to be a busy holiday for all of our road workers, especially those who handle our passes, so we offer a huge THANKS for their hard work and ask that everyone help them out by giving them as much room as possible and slowing down

UPDATE 12:30 p.m. Sunday: Work continues on reopening the passes and crews are managing massive amounts of snow and ice. I-90 Snoqualmie and US 97 Blewett passes will open later today, but we do not yet have an ETA. Please do not head out or start lining up at closure points until we provide an update in the early evening. We're doing a test run of supplementing our traffic cameras with a team of birds who are reporting back what they're seeing. While they have a bit more flexibility than cameras and can move pretty fast, they're also easily distracted by potential food - though so am I. Anyway, here's one of the team, a red-tailed hawk (according to the Department of Fish and Wildlife) keeping an eye on I-5 in north Seattle. Today is the last day for full closures this week on the US 101 Simpson Avenue Bridge in Hoquiam, near the coast. The 97-year-old bridge is having its’ steel beams repaired. Usually, we only have to close one lane for this kind of work. But the lanes on this bridge, built in 1928, are narrow are too narrow to do that safely.
