Heading to Denali Backcountry Lodge, True Wilderness Deep in Denali via helicopter. The Koyukon are a people of Alaskan Athabaskans (also known as Dena), who settled in the interior area north of the mountain. In 1975, the state of Alaska requested that the mountain be officially recognized as Denali, as it was still the common name used in the state and was traditional among Alaska Native peoples for thousands of years. #denali #mountdenali #denalinationalpark #mountains #alaska #helicopter #in

Athabascan Snowshoes traditionally a primary source of travel in the interior during winter. This was especially true when encountering deep snow when a hunter tracks a moose that is itself in soft deep snow up to its belly. The snowshoe evenly spreads out the weight of the hunter/traveler keeping them buoyant above the deep snow. These snowshoes were made by Moses Henzie, Koyukon Athabascan. #ANHC #culturaltourism | Alaska Native Heritage Center

In late 1992, soldiers at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, gathered around a small television. A strange news report transfixed them. Seismologists had detected something strange deep under the Alaskan wilderness. Earlier that year, on May 22nd, 1992, China had detonated a massive 1-megaton nuclear device under the remote sands of Lop Nor. The Earth's shock waves rippled through the Earth's crust, and when the seismic data were analyzed, a shocking discovery was made. The only problem was t
