A look at some of the conditions and collisions on I-90 Snoqualmie Pass last week. Between Jan. 24-27, we measured 52 inches of new snowfall, including 20 on Jan. 24 alone. While our snowplows work hard to keep the roadway open, that much snow means the roads won't be clear. But many of these collisions could be avoided by slowing down and adhering to restriction requirements like chains. Thursday night our crews closed I-90 east of the Snoqualmie Pass summit to remove overhanging snow from the under-construction wildlife overcrossing near Price Creek (milepost 62). The tunnel-like structure is being built in stages and will eventually have walls on the sides to prevent snow, debris and, let's face it, animals, from falling onto the highway. We're doing a test run of supplementing our traffic cameras with a team of birds who are reporting back what they're seeing. While they have a bit more flexibility than cameras and can move pretty fast, they're also easily distracted by potential food - though so am I.
