Fond of wetlands and wet ground, Purple Loosestrife is common at water’s edge. Bushy and tall (up to seven feet) its many sided stems come from the main roots. Purple spikes hold rings of six petaled flowers on top. Producing 300,000 long lasting seeds per stem, it is fast growing and dense, its crowding nature can prevent neighboring plant growth witch is necessary for ecological diversity needed by fish, birds, and animals. 🚜Protecting wet meadows with mowing🚜 Purple loosestrife is an invasive plant taking over wetlands across North America, especially in areas that dry out part of the year, like seasonal wet meadows. This plant crowds out native species and is considered a harmful weed in Nebraska, which means we need to take action to control it. We initially tried aerial spraying, but it caused more harm than good. So, we switched to more effective management strategies. Now, we mow purple loosestrife when it

Purple loosestrife is an invasive wetland plant that is beautiful, but dangerous. Imported in the 1800s from Europe to use for ornamental purposes in gardens and landscaping. This plant blooms from June to September and due to its long flowering season, this plant has the ability to produce millions of seeds each year. In addition to seeds, purple loosestrife can also produce vegetatively by sending up shoots from the root systems. The underground stems can grow up to a foot each growing season.
