July 1930 saw the withdrawal of this Beyer Peacock 2-6-0 locomotive (pictured) which was Midland & South Western Junction Railway number 16 when it was built in 1896. The Great Western Railway took over the locomotives from the M&SWJR after the grouping in November 1923. It then became number 24 when rebuilt at Swindon in February 1925 and was given a new boiler, superheating, GWR cab and a GWR tender. The locomotive was variously affectionately known as “Galloping Alice” or “Galloping Gertie”.
