Washington’s latest revision of its gas tax will take effect Tuesday, costing an additional six cents per gallon, bringing the total tax to 55.4 cents per gallon.

Lawmakers considered other ways to fund the state's megaprojects, highway maintenance and ferries, but stuck with the gas tax because of its low overhead.

The tax will rise by 6 cents a gallon, the first increase in nine years for the primary revenue source sustaining Washington’s transportation system.
