Hurricane Erin weakened to a category 3 hurricane during the early hours of Aug. 19 as it moves closer to the East Coast, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The NHC said it currently expected Erin to become a Category 4 storm later Saturday but to eventually swerve away from the continental United States.
Hurricane forecasters continued to track a tropical wave off the coast of Africa Sunday morning as Hurricane Erin weakened to a Category 3 storm following an eyewall replacement cycle.
Hurricane Erin has weakened but is still a powerful Category 3 storm with max sustained winds of 115 mph and moving northwest at 7 mph.
