GLADE SPRING, Va. — Artist Nancy Johnson uses her colorful, folk-art paintings to share her experiences growing up African-American in Southwest Virginia in the 1930s.

Her abstract style of painting has been labeled by others as African folk art. “The concepts behind my work go so much deeper than being just a pretty picture,” she explained.

Erich Bödeker was a German sculptor associated with the so-called naïve art. His brightly painting wooden sculptures were evocative of African folk art and often depicted animals and nude figures.
