Central Indiana once again had highs around 40° on Saturday. However, this was early, around 12-1 a.m., before a cold front passed through. Temperatures slowly fell with afternoon highs only in the 30s.
Any sort of wind along with the bitter cold will make for frostbite in as little as 15 to 20 minutes in the incoming arctic cold. Our long-range forecast models are continuing to pump in wind chill temperatures between -15° and 0° consistently each morning Monday through Wednesday.
According to the NWS, the Arctic polar vortex is a powerful band of west-to-east winds that develops in the stratosphere, about 10 to 30 miles above the North Pole, during the winter season. It is always present near the poles, though it weakens during summer and intensifies in winter.
