Why he might stay: Simply put, you know what you’re getting in Rush. He’s an established veteran backup. He knows the Cowboys' offense, including that of their OC-turned-head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Plus, Rush has built up a long-term rapport with Prescott.
In addition to Lance's departure, Cooper Rush, who's played seven seasons in Dallas, is set to be an unrestricted free agent. The Cowboys could look to the free-agent market and try to lure a backup with starting experience such as Justin Fields or Drew Lock to fill the void.
The Dallas Cowboys gave up a fourth-round pick to take a look at Trey Lance. The club is now ready to invest another pick in a young quarterback to develop behind Dak Prescott. Prescott will be the highest-paid player in the NFL this season.
The Cowboys expect Trey Lance to depart this offseason, and with Cooper Rush also a free agent the team's next backup could come via the draft.
Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said the team thinks highly of Rush but won't necessarily re-sign him, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports.
