An eyewall replacement cycle is underway within Hurricane Erin as the monster storm continues to barrel across the Atlantic while bringing gusty winds and rain to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands after rapidly intensifying into a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane over the weekend.

A heat advisory has been issued for the Dallas-Fort Worth area and points east, as a powerful and rapidly intensifying Hurricane Erin churns in the Caribbean.

Erin is expected to reach major hurricane intensity this weekend as it tracks just north of the Caribbean islands, where it could bring rain, gusty winds and high surf. Erin's longer-term future through next week is still somewhat uncertain,

As of Tuesday night, the system remained disorganized and was mainly producing tropical rain as it tracks northwestward. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the disturbance—currently classified as a tropical wave—is located near the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and is expected to cross the region today.

Erin strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane on Friday morning east of the Caribbean Islands and is expected to keep strengthening through the weekend.
