Since Democratic lawmakers left Texas to delay Republicans’ new map, state leaders have challenged the limits of traditional democratic norms to break the impasse.

Senator Bernie Sanders, a longtime opponent of gerrymandering who called Texas Republicans’ redistricting plans “pathetic,” said partisan line-drawing undermines the political process and urged Democrats “to fight back.”

Sen. John Cornyn and state Attorney General Ken Paxton have been competing to show that they’re supporting Trump and fighting Democrats.
