The European Commission on Tuesday proposed tariffs on additional farm imports from Russia and its ally Belarus, in a new effort to choke off revenues to fund Moscow’s war on Ukraine. The 27-nation EU has hit Russia with multiple rounds of sanctions in response to its all-out invasion of its neighbor in 2022.

The European Commission proposed on Tuesday imposing tariffs on more agricultural products and certain nitrogen-based fertilisers from Russia and its ally Belarus to prevent a potential threat to EU food security.

Energy ministers from Belgium, France and Spain, whose ports receive shipments from Russian LNG tankers, have insisted that very little of the gas arriving is used domestically and that most is piped on to other EU countries. In November, Germany ordered its state-operated import terminals to reject any Russian LNG cargoes.

Instead, the proposal will halt the supply of Russian LNG to EU terminals not connected to the bloc's gas system, which will not significantly impact the majority of LNG imports. The sanctions will also target Russian oil tankers within the so-called "shadow fleet,
