Called torpedo bats, the lumbers are the brainchild of a former MIT physicist and Yankees employee, according to Sports Illustrated. The bats’ wood is moved lower down the barrel after the label and shapes the end a little like a bowling pin.

Other teams, including the Atlanta Braves, are jumping on the torpedo bat train, per ESPN's Buster Ulney.
