The Biden administration added more than two dozen Chinese entities to a U.S. restricted trade list on Wednesday, including Zhipu AI, a developer of large language models, and Sophgo, a company whose TSMC-made chip was illegally incorporated into a Huawei artificial intelligence processor.

The US Commerce Department added 25 companies based in China, as well as two in Singapore, to its Entity List. Being placed on this list means that these companies can no longer receive US goods or technology without a special license,

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Biden administration blacklisted 25 Chinese entities on Wednesday, including the company whose TSMC chip was discovered in a Huawei processor.

TSMC told Reuters that it has not delivered chips to Huawei since the sanctions went into effect and that it strictly adheres to US export restrictions. But Huawei has made headway in the Chinese market, launching new smartphones fuelled by chips made by another Chinese semiconductor provider, SMIC, which is also targeted by US sanctions.

The world's most advanced contract chipmaker has severed its ties with a Singapore-based company after a client review exposed a potential breach of US export controls, according to people familiar with the matter.

The moves are part of the Biden administration’s last-gasp efforts to clamp down on China’s harnessing of AI for its military and tech sector.
