President Donald Trump issued an executive order on his first day in office Jan. 20 that announced a 90-day freeze in U.S. foreign development assistance, forcing mass layoffs and furloughs. There have been a few exceptions to the funding freeze, such as emergency food assistance.

A federal judge has extended the pause on the Trump administration’s dismantling of USAID for another week after an extensive hearing Thursday.

U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols, who was nominated by Trump, handed the administration and billionaire ally Elon Musk a setback last week by temporarily halting plans that would have put thousands of workers on leave and given those abroad only 30 days to return to the United States at government expense.
