Alex Delvecchio’s hockey story parallels the nearly 100-year story of the Detroit Red Wings franchise. He died Tuesday, July 1 at the age of 93.

A center who skated alongside Gordie Howe on the team’s famed “Production Line,” he helped win three Stanley Cups and stood out for his clean play over 24 years in Detroit.

Delvecchio was a Stanley Cup champion in 1952, 1954 and 1955, and three times was voted winner of the Lady Byng Trophy (1959, 1966, 1969), awarded to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.
